International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) released India’s first Type Approval Certificate (TAC) for Bharat Stage – VI (BS – VI) norms for the 2 wheeler segment at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on 10th June 2019.

Shri Dinesh Tyagi, Director – ICAT released the certificate and handed it over to the top officials of the OEM (M/s Hero MotoCorp Ltd).

This is India’s first certification in the two wheeler segment for the BS – VI norms that are the latest emission norms as notified by the Government of India.

Bharat Stage norms are the automotive emission norms which the automotive manufacturers have to comply to if they want to sell their vehicles in India. These norms are applicable to all 2 wheelers (2W), 3 wheelers (3W), 4 wheelers (4W) including cars, mini trucks, buses and heavy duty trucks (HCV) and Construction Equipment Vehicles (CEV) which would be plying on the Indian roads.

In order to curb the growing menace of air pollution through the vehicular emissions, the Government of India has decided to leapfrog from the existing BS – IV norms to the BS – VI, thereby skipping the BS – V norms, and to implement the BS-VI norms with effect from 1st April 2020. This means that from 1st April 2020 onwards, only those vehicles (2W, 3W and 4W) will be sold and registered in India which comply to these norms. These norms are the most stringent norms which are at par with the global standards.

Taking a lead in this direction, ICAT has taken many steps in providing assistance and support to the automotive industry for the development, optimization and calibration of engines and vehicles for complying to these upcoming emission norms. This includes activities like development of engines and its child parts viz injector, carburetor etc., calibration of Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and finally optimization of the vehicles with the new parts to meet these stricter norms.

Last year ICAT has issued the approval for BS- VI norms to M/s Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles (VECV) for the Heavy Commercial Vehicle (HCV) segment which was also the first in its segment in India.

ICAT is the premier testing and certification agency authorized by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) for providing testing and certification services to the vehicle and component manufacturers situated within India and abroad. In addition to the certification services, ICAT is providing extensive testing services for product development and validation. With the capital investment of over INR 1,300 crore and the facilities spread over 8 acres (32,376 sq.m) of land at ICAT Centre-I and over 46.6 acres (1,87,335 sq.m) of land at ICAT Centre-II, the institute is rendering valuable services to the global automotive industry. ICAT has the latest equipment, facilities and capabilities to develop, validate, test and certify the engines and vehicles for the latest norms in field of emission and many other facilities like crash lab, NVH lab, EMC lab, test tracks etc.
