MG Group, the largest privately-owned bus building group in India, will showcase its new product offerings at the Bus World in Bengaluru, to be held from August 29 to 31, 2018 at BIEC. The Group has recently setup a state of the art manufacturing unit for producing 800 luxury coaches and premium buses at its Belgaum plant. It has the unique distinction of working with all the major OEM partners present in the bus industry in India. It crossed a major milestone last year of having produced over 100,000 buses and coaches.
“We are honoured and privileged today that MG is the first choice for OEM partners looking for collaboration with Bus Builders, having made our name with our design and engineering capabilities. The Group is continuously on the lookout for new challenges and opportunities across the industry segments where it is present. Design and engineering being our core area of strength, we look forward to producing best in class mobility solutions reflecting our true passion for the commercial vehicle industry,” Anil M Kamat, Managing Director, MG Group told Automotive Script.
Though MG has been a trusted supplier to leading OEMs, it has recently ventured into the retail segment and is making a name for itself in the B to C segment with various products targeted for the value coach and premium segment. “The response has been humbling and we are further encouraged by the support and confidence of our esteemed customers,” he said.

The Group is well prepared for the hybridization and electrification of vehicles as the automotive industry is undergoing a major disruption through these technologies. “The current eco-system in automotive is radically progressing towards electrification and realization of the Government’s aggressive approach to electrify all new vehicles by 2030, hence pushing all manufacturers in this direction. MG Group is manufacturing BYD Electric Bus bodies for STU’s like HPTC, BEST, KSRTC& TSRTC at our Zaheerabad plant. In addition MG was recently approached by Greaves Cotton, a leading player in the 3-wheeler engine sector for a concept electric three wheeler which was unveiled at Auto Expo in Delhi earlier this year,” he said.
MG Group does not support the conversion of the entire automotive industry to electric by 2030. “We feel that the government should set more realistic goals aligned with the international trends and possibilities. The focus should be to have a minimal carbon footprint by removing dependence on fossil fuels with a mixed bag of green fuels. Moving the country’s entire automotive industry onto a single energy source is not in our interest, especially with new technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells moving into the main stream with successful trials on proto vehicles,” Kamat said.
The MG Group was founded by its Chairman Mr. Mohan V. Kamat in 1980. The group forayed into bus building in 1996 with its plant MG Automotives Pvt Ltd in Zaheerabad, Telangana. Subsequently MG Automotives (Bus & Coach) Pvt Ltd was setup in Belgaum, Karnataka, in 2004. Today MG Group is the largest private sector bus building group in the country. It employs over 2500 people.
“The ‘ease of doing business’ in India is getting better day by day. We still have a long way to go to be able to position us at par with the leading economies of the world. Simple mechanism such as single window clearances for industrial licences will go a long way in encouraging foreign direct investment in India. Also consistency and enforcement of the Central government policies and regulations will help further instilling the confidence in foreign organizations looking to invest and participate in the Indian market economy. Cohesive Government support in terms of subsidies, grants and tax incentives will also help in attracting major international players as well as domestic companies to push the industrial growth in India, he said.
The MG Group is keen on the implementation of the Bus Code and various other regulations — for Seater: AIS 052, Sleeper: AIS 119; School Bus: AIS 063’, Roll Over standards: AIS 031 — as these would help enforce safety standards for bus building, a major requirement in India. It is also looking for the automotive industry’s migration to BS VI in 2020 after the present transition to BS IV from BS III. “Such regulations will help the organized bus building sector offer products that are safe, comfortable and durable for the Indian customers and bring the industry at par with other matured markets internationally,” .
